10 Lessons I've learnt in 10 Years as a Skin Therapist

As a passionate Skin Therapist, I have taken care of so many clients during my 17 years in this industry and in my 10 years of GLO, I have seen just as many common behaviours and conditions, and these lessons have taught me that it's not just about your products but factors around us that also play a part in how healthy our skin is.

Here, I want to to share my lessons to you, to help you give your skin the best in how you take care of it and look after it- we only have one skin, so let's do what we can to keep it healthy and in top shape!

1. People don’t get themselves checked for Skin Cancers as frequently as they should

With skin cancer rates at a high level in Australia, we must be having our skin checked once a year (at least) and if you have a family history of Skin Cancers or have previously had some removed, then your visits should be more frequent. Of course, if you notice anything that does feel or look right, then best to have it checked asap.

The great thing is clinics send you a 6 month or yearly reminder so we are always reminded of when we are due. When you get that reminder- book it in!

SPF is a must-have product in our skincare routine to keep our skin protected from the harmful and damaging UVA and UVB rays. And be sure to apply the SPF daily to your children's skin to give them the best possible protection on their delicate skins.

2. Our home care routine needs to work best with our lifestyle

Just like the products we use on our skin, our home care needs to be personalised too and worked into our lifestyle and commitments. For example, I recommend having set days of the week to exfoliate your skin so you remember to do it. Gone are the days also where we need to be always using a mask straight after exfoliation on the same day, this may not work for some so doing it on separate days is absolutely all ok too.

3. Come and see us when your skin is not its best!

Not the opposite! This is the time you need to come and get some professional advice and treatment so we can work with you in getting your skin back to its healthiest. There are many reasons that cause changes in the skin and we are here to help guide and treat these concerns as they appear. As every skin is different, it's important you have personalised support and advice that is right for you.

4. Different climates around the country affect our skin so differently

Summer in QLD is very different to summer in the centre of our country and each climate affects our skin in different ways. Humidity works wonders for some and the dry heat helps others etc. Using the correct products for your skin and the climate will ensure your skin is healthy and radiant all year round. We travelled around Australia in 2018 educating Australians on how to get their healthiest skin ever and I noticed my skin change as the climate and weather changed and my skincare products needed to fit so that it always felt healthy and looked radiant. The one product that I did notice got me through no matter what the condition was the Biolumin C Serum for its brightening, firming and protective benefits to the skin.

5. The cause of a skin condition for one person may not be the same as another

Our bodies, our lifestyles and our skins are different to another. One person's cause for their breakouts may not be the same as their friend who has suddenly started experiencing breakouts for example. We look at external factors and changes that may be happening that could explain what’s going on and help you understand the why and what needs to be done to treat this.

6. Our skin changes more frequently than we think

Seasonally, ageing, environment, hormones are some of the most common reasons.

The moment our skin starts to feel different is the moment we need to ensure your home care routine is keeping up. It's not necessarily a time to change brands, but looking at the products and adjusting accordingly. I know personally, many of the Dermalogica products I am using on my skin today are different to what I was using 5 years ago.

In summer, we experience more oil in the skin from the warmer weather and our body heat so It's often common to also adjust your moisturiser from summer to winter as our oil flow slows down in the cooler months.

In times of stress, we may notice more breakouts and whilst self-care management is crucial at this time for our wellbeing, having a go-to product to help speed up the healing of these breakouts plus helping reduce the signs of stress-induced ageing is very important. 7. Self-diagnosis is not always the best when selecting products for your skin.

This is something that I see too often. Every skin is so different and your products must target your concerns. Of course, there are products we can all benefit from however it's important you get some professional advice to understand the skin type you have and what cleanser, moisturiser exfoliant etc will be most suitable.  I love that we share products that we love, and if you are interested, check in with us to ensure this is the best product for your skin.

8. A good nights sleep really does benefit the skin

Restful slumber is so important for our skin. During the night while we sleep our skin repairs and rejuvenates itself so be sure to give it the best start by double cleansing the skin and using targeted products to work on your concerns during the night. It's not just our bodies that will love you after a good nights sleep- you’re skin will show you too!

9. Consistency Consistency Consistency

This is the key! Morning and night, every-single-day-of-the-year.

If you tend to be a little inconsistent with your home care, give it a try for a week at least. You will notice a huge difference in the way the skin looks and feels.

10. Its never too late to start…

I often hear people say “oh its a bit late for me”. Its absolutely never too late to start taking care of your skin. Our skin is the biggest organ of the body and it would love your attention and focus. Give it some love because when our skin is healthy and radiant, we feel it!…and people will notice!
