Serum

A lightweight, water-based liquid formulated to deliver concentrated active ingredients to the skin's surface layers.

A serum is a skincare product defined by its thin, fast-absorbing texture and high concentration of active ingredients. Unlike heavier creams or lotions, serums use a lightweight vehicle — typically water or silicone-based — with smaller molecular structures designed to carry actives closer to where they can do their work in the upper layers of the skin.

How a serum functions in your routine comes down to its formulation. Because serums skip the heavy emollients and occlusive agents found in moisturisers, they can pack in higher percentages of targeted actives like vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, or retinol. You apply a serum after cleansing and before moisturising, so it sits on relatively bare skin where absorption is less hindered by other product layers. Think of it as the step where you address specific concerns — whether that's uneven tone, dehydration, or visible signs of ageing.

When choosing a serum, consider what your skin actually needs rather than layering several at once. A hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, for example, works by binding water to the upper skin layers, while a vitamin C serum supports antioxidant defence against environmental stressors. Pairing your serum with a good moisturiser on top helps seal in those actives and supports the skin barrier. If you're using an active like retinol, start gently and introduce it slowly, giving your skin time to adjust.

A few honest caveats worth knowing: a serum is not a replacement for sunscreen, moisturiser, or a balanced routine. More expensive does not automatically mean more effective, and higher concentrations of actives are not always better — they can sometimes irritate, especially on sensitive skin.
