How to look after your skin during the festive season
The festive time is a time for fun and relaxation! Although this festive season might not be the same as previous years, we still want to have a great time with family and friends and fill it with wonderful memories. We want our skin to look radiant too, so here are my top tips to keep your skin healthy and glowing this festive season.
There are 5 key areas that can affect the way our skin looks and feels. Let's take a look at these and learn how to protect our skin from potential changes:
- The Sun
- Blue light
- Drinking and Festive food
On holidays, we spend more time outdoors, so applying your sunscreen is extremely important to ensure your skin is well protected... and not just your face but your body too! UV rays are the biggest contributing factor to the signs of ageing such as wrinkles, pigmentation and skin sagging. So your best anti-ageing cream is definitely the SPF!
What is my favourite SPF product? I have mild eczema on my body, so the Protection 50 Sport was a game changer! It feels so good on my body and it has 80 mins water resistance, making it perfect to exercise or jump in the pool! Plus its a body moisturiser and SPF all-in-one.
A little tip: Exfoliate your body to keep it smooth and use a soap-free body wash followed by a hydrating moisturiser after you have been outdoors.
2. Blue Light
There is an increase in awareness around blue light and how it affects us. Blue light is produced naturally from the sun, however, it also comes from Smartphones, TV, computers and any other 'screen' devices.
Whether we are still working over Christmas or relaxing at home, screens have become a part of our daily lives and blue light, unfortunately, contributes to hyperpigmentation and the breakdown of our collagen and elastin.
Good news! Dermalogica has the answer for us all and the Invisible Physical Defense SPF30 not only protects agains the harmful UV rays, it protects us from the Blue light too!
- Moisturise and protect all-in-one
- Water resistant for up-to 80mins
- Protects against moisture loss
- Lightweight and sheer finish
- Blends well for all skin tones
- Zinc based protection
- Friendly for kids and sensitive skins
Do you find, when something exciting is coming up, it becomes hard to sleep? Me too! We are so excited we find ourselves waking up extra early one morning, only to then need a nap and potentially affect our sleep that night again! It's like a vicious cycle!
The festive time brings with it celebrations that last well into the night. On the flip side, it can also bring times of rest. While we sleep, our skin repairs and rejuvenates itself, so it's crucial to give our bodies this valuable slumber. If we miss this opportunity, then we can start to see some changes to the skin like breakouts, sensitivity, dehydration.
We can also see the signs of a bad night's sleep the next day - dull and tired looking skin. During times like now, my go-to nighttime product is the Dermalogica Sound Sleep Cocoon. A night moisturiser that works with the skin’s natural overnight repair and recovery process to optimise the skin benefits of sleep. It can minimise the impact of my ‘bad sleeping day’. It's also perfect in summer time as it is a light gel cream, and it aids in the recovery of hydration levels that are lost throughout a hot day.
- Optimises night-time recovery
- Brings visible radiance to the skin every morning
- Softens fine lines
- Promotes deep and restful sleep
4. Festive Food and Drinking
Hands up who loves the food at Christmas time! So much, so good and yes, we just keep eating and drinking - It's all part of the festive season package.
Our diet can be very different during the festive period and whilst sometimes the healthy eating goes off track, we are here to help you understand what happens to the skin when that happens. The good news, once the festive period finishes, we are good at getting back on board with our normal eating habits.
With our diet changes and more of the 'sometimes foods', the skin can become dehydrated, which can lead to skin sensitivity, redness and dull-looking skin, plus accelerated premature ageing.
Needless to say, it is so important to drink lots of water to keep flushing toxins from the body! Unfortunately, when the body needs water like this, the skin is the last to be supplied. So it is a great idea to hydrate the skin externally with good skincare products. Dermalogica HydroMasque Exfoliant is a product that helps your skin in many ways. First, it's a hydrating masque that contains snow mushrooms (an ingredient that can carry 450 times its weight), it's got bamboo primes to exfoliate the skin and cucumber extract soothes and refreshes the summer skin. Alternatively, hydrating the skin can be as simple as spraying the Multi-Active Toner onto the skin throughout the day!
In addition, when your diet is not as healthy, probiotics in our system are weakened. Having a healthy number of probiotics helps to balance hydration levels, sensitivity, inflammation and control oil flow. Another detoxifying product is Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant that is an exfoliation that also contains Active Charcoal for detoxification. This product contains Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) too, that helps visibly minimise enlarged pores, dullness, and strengthen the skin.
Dermalogica Active Clay Cleanser has Active Charcoal and Kaolin Clay that is highly detoxifying to the skin. Charcoal adheres impurities from the skin and pores to give deep cleansing. This product also contains Prebiotics (a superfood to the Probiotics that live on your skin to protect and keep the skin's balance).
We can finally travel interstate! Hooray! You're probably asking how travel can effect the skin? We are exposed to all of the above when we travel, and often at a greater level. Depending on where we stay, air con and transport can dry our skins. Remember to pack your skincare, so your routine can remain consistent and on point. Travel-size products can be handy at this time! Check out Dermalogica's Limited Edition Christmas Packs, with great value small products included!

Would you also believe that stress is one of the biggest factors to causing changes in our skin so Its a good idea to give your a skin holiday too. Give yourself a face masque or mini facial massage to help your skin feel loved and helping you relax and unwind.
