Start a Skincare Routine and get out of the Self-Isolation Rut

Life has changed dramatically over the last few weeks. As we brace ourselves for an indoor lifestyle, it’s essential to create some daily routines to stay sane and keep motivated.

Now is a great time to begin, or fully commit, to a daily skincare routine. Not only will it make you feel better, but it will help to create some structure in your day.

Let’s look at what makes up an essential daily skincare routine…

Step One: Double Cleanse

Double cleansing is the secret to healthy skin. Two cleanses are better than one when it comes to achieving a clean skin, but what takes your cleanse to an entirely new level is cleansing first with a pre-cleansing oil or balm, followed by a skin-specific cleanser.
Oil or balm cleansers are a magnet for all oil-based debris on the skin. They break down the layers of dirt, grime, make-up, sunscreens and pollutants without disturbing the skins protective barrier.
Try either Dermalogica’s PreCleanse oil, or for drier skin, PreCleanse Balm. Massage your oil or balm onto dry skin, using dry hands, and watch the dirt melt away. Next, add water to emulsify, massage and rinse away.
Now you’re ready for your second cleanse, which you’ll select based on your skin. Generally speaking, milky cleansers suit a drier skin, foaming cleansers are good for combination skins and shower cleansers, and clay-based cleansers purify an oilier skin.

Step Two: Exfoliate

Exfoliation removes the outer layers of damaged, dead skin, revealing smooth, refined and brighter skin. The skin is pre-programmed to continuously shed and renew itself, however, this process can be easily slowed down by many factors including age, stress, the environment, dehydration and a lack of sleep. Exfoliation keeps the accelerator on the skin’s renewal process so that we can live in our healthiest skin.
You can choose to gently buff your skin every day, or go for a more powerful weekly exfoliant, or even combine both for the most flawless skin! Dermalogica boasts a multitude of exfoliants, providing an option for every skin type and individual’s lifestyle. A good exfoliant to start with, especially if you’re a sensitive skin, is Dermalogica’s award winner, Daily Microfoliant. This rice-based powder exfoliant can be used once a day and gently polishes and brightens the skin. Foam up half a teaspoon of powder with water to create a fluffy consistency, and work over the skin for 1 – 2 minutes, before washing off.
If you’re someone who is used to having a regular professional skin treatment, Rapid Reveal Peel is the exfoliant for you right now. This super smoothing exfoliant is packed with brightening and hydrating Lactic Acid, plus Pumpkin enzyme for additional resurfacing. Pick one evening a week to use this exfoliant, leaving it on the skin from 3 – 7 minutes, before rinsing off and following with your night-time skincare.

Step Three: Tone

Rest assured we’re no longer dealing with harsh astringent toners. The majority of today’s toners infuse, or spritz, the skin with moisture, whilst treating specific skin challenges such as sensitivity and skin ageing.
As well as boosting hydration, your toner will also improve the absorption of your serums and moisturiser. Once you’ve cleansed and/or exfoliated your skin, spritz with toner, and then while your toner is still damp, follow with your remaining products.
Dermalogica’s Multi-Active Toner is the go-to for a moisture hit and ideal for all skins. What’s great about this spritz toner, is that you can use it throughout the day, anytime you need a refreshing boost. If you are concerned with sensitivity and redness then the UltraCalming Mist will be your go-to or for hydration and firmness, we recommend the Antioxidant Hydramist.

Step Four: Moisturise

Moisturisers are an essential staple in our daily skincare routine. They work on two levels: they top up and lock in moisture and protect the skin's barrier.
We all need to moisturise, even oily skin. In fact, an oily skin that isn’t given daily moisture will produce more oil as a result! What oily skins need is an oil-free option that’s light and hydrating, such as Dermalogica’s Active Moist. For a combination/normal skin, opt for Dermalogica cult favourite, Skin Smoothing Cream and for drier or mature skin, Intensive Moisture Balance is ideal.

Step 5: SPF is a must-have

All year round! Even though we’re spending most of our time inside, we still need to apply a sunscreen during the day. UVA rays have a long wavelength, meaning they can penetrate through the glass into the skin, plus we have the same levels of these rays all year round! Dermalogica’s new Invisible Physical Defense SPF30 is a perfect choice right now as it also protects against harmful blue light emitted from our technology.
Your skin is your largest organ and taking care of it each day is just as important as brushing your teeth! Be kind to yourself and be kind to your skin!
