Double Cleansing

A two-step face wash method that uses an oil-based cleanser first, then a water-based cleanser to thoroughly remove impurities.

Double cleansing is a sequential washing technique where you cleanse your face twice, each time with a different type of cleanser. The first step uses an oil-based product (a cleansing oil or balm), and the second uses a water-based cleanser (like a gel, cream, or foam wash). Micellar water is water-based, so it behaves more like a gentle stand-alone cleanse than a true first step. The idea is that each step targets a different category of buildup on your skin.

The mechanism is straightforward: oil dissolves oil. Your first cleanse works on the principle that oil-based formulas bind to oil-soluble debris on the skin's surface, including sunscreen, makeup, sebum, and pollution particles. When you rinse or wipe that away, you've lifted the bulk of the day's buildup. The second cleanse, using a water-based formula, then addresses any remaining water-soluble residue like sweat and leftover surfactants, leaving the skin's surface genuinely clean and ready to absorb the products that follow.

Double cleansing is worth considering if you wear sunscreen daily (which you should in Australia), use makeup, or live in a city environment where particulate matter settles on skin throughout the day. It pairs well with gentle, pH-balanced second cleansers that support your skin's barrier rather than stripping it. If you have naturally drier or more sensitive skin, look for a nourishing oil cleanser in step one and a mild, fragrance-free wash in step two.

Honest caveats: double cleansing is not essential for everyone. If you have a minimal routine and don't wear sunscreen or makeup, a single thorough cleanse may be perfectly adequate. Over-cleansing can compromise your skin's moisture barrier, so if your face feels tight or irritated afterwards, scale back or choose gentler formulas. There is no strong clinical evidence that double cleansing outperforms a single, well-formulated cleanser used properly. It is a practical technique, not a miracle step. If you notice persistent irritation, dryness, or breakouts despite adjusting your routine, consider speaking with a skincare professional for guidance tailored to your skin.
