Essence

A lightweight, water-based liquid applied after cleansing to boost hydration and help skin absorb the products that follow.

An essence is a thin, watery skincare product that sits between a toner and a serum in both texture and function. Originating from Korean and Japanese skincare traditions, essences are formulated with a high proportion of water alongside humectants, fermented filtrates, or low concentrations of active ingredients. Their purpose is to deliver a layer of lightweight hydration while preparing your skin to receive subsequent products more effectively.

Essences work by flooding the upper layers of the skin with water-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or ferment filtrates like galactomyces or saccharomyces. Because the formula is so fluid, it absorbs rapidly without leaving a heavy residue. This added hydration can temporarily plump the skin's surface and support a healthier-looking moisture barrier. Many essences also contain gentle antioxidants or soothing botanicals, though typically at lower concentrations than you would find in a dedicated serum.

You would reach for an essence if your skin feels tight or dehydrated after cleansing, or if you want to layer hydration without adding weight. Apply it to slightly damp skin using your palms, pressing gently rather than rubbing. It pairs well with almost any routine and works beautifully under serums, moisturisers, and sunscreen. If you have oily skin, an essence can sometimes provide enough hydration on its own under SPF during warmer months.

Honestly, an essence is not a must-have for everyone. If your routine already includes a hydrating toner and a good serum, you may not notice a dramatic difference by adding one. It will not replace targeted treatments for specific concerns, and the fermented ingredients some essences feature can occasionally irritate sensitive skin. Start with a small amount and give your skin a few weeks to adjust before deciding whether it earns a permanent spot in your lineup.
