Exfoliant

A product or ingredient that helps remove dead skin cells from the surface, revealing fresher skin underneath.

An exfoliant is any product or active ingredient designed to accelerate the removal of dead cells from the outermost layer of skin. Skin naturally sheds these cells on its own, but the process can slow with age, sun exposure, or certain skin types, leading to dullness, congestion, or uneven texture. Exfoliants give that turnover process a nudge.

There are two broad categories. Physical exfoliants use fine particles or textured surfaces to manually buff away dead cells. Chemical exfoliants use acids or enzymes to dissolve the bonds holding dead cells together, letting them release more evenly. Common chemical options include AHAs like glycolic and lactic acid (which work on the skin's surface) and BHAs like salicylic acid (which are oil-soluble, so they can work within pores). Enzyme exfoliants, often derived from papaya or pineapple, offer a gentler alternative by breaking down keratin protein.

When choosing an exfoliant, think about your skin's current tolerance and what you want to address. If you're starting out, a lower-strength lactic acid or a gentle enzyme formula is a supportive first step. Exfoliants pair well with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, but be cautious combining multiple active acids in the same routine, and always follow with sunscreen during the day, since freshly exfoliated skin is more sensitive to UV.

Honest limits: more exfoliation does not equal better skin. Over-exfoliating can compromise your skin barrier, leading to dryness, irritation, or increased sensitivity. Most people benefit from exfoliating just one to three times per week rather than daily. If your skin is feeling raw, tight, or reactive, ease off and focus on barrier support. And if you have a persistent skin concern that isn't improving with consistent, gentle care, it's worth speaking to a skincare professional for tailored guidance.
