PDRN

PDRN is a fragment of DNA, usually sourced from salmon, used in skincare to support hydration and a calmer, more comfortable feel.

PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, which is a mouthful for what is essentially a chain of DNA fragments. Most cosmetic PDRN is purified from salmon or trout sperm or roe, chosen because these fragments are structurally similar to our own genetic building blocks. In skincare it sits in the broad family of soothing, conditioning actives rather than exfoliants or acids.

PDRN is a large, water-loving molecule, so on the skin surface it helps bind and hold water in the upper layers, which supports a plumper, more settled feel. You'll usually find it in serums, essences and ampoules, often paired with hyaluronic acid or panthenol to build a gentle hydrating base. Formulations tend to keep it in low concentrations, and the vehicle matters as much as the number on the label.

Consider PDRN when your skin feels tight, reactive or in need of calm, particularly after a more active routine. It layers kindly under a moisturiser and pairs well with barrier-supporting ingredients.

Honestly, the strong clinical evidence sits with injectable medical PDRN, not topical skincare, so treat surface products as comfort and hydration support rather than a dramatic fix. If you have a fish or seafood allergy, patch test first, and if a persistent concern isn't settling, it's worth speaking to a skincare professional.
