Skincare: Back to Basics

GLO Skin Body Founder Sarah shares the importance of the basic steps in your home care routine: Cleanse, Exfoliate, Moisturise!

02 Jul 20

Whether you are a total skin savvy or a complete novice when it comes to all things skin care, everyone should be consistent with these primary skin care steps.

Let’s have a look at the basics: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturise!

Cleansing

This is without a doubt the most important, not to be missed step!

Cleansing creates a blank canvas on the skin, clearing away impurities and allowing all your further products to penetrate deeper, providing longer lasting, more effective results.

Imagine you were to wash a dirty pan, but didn’t use washing up liquid. There’s no way the grease and grim would effectively lift away with just water. Your skin is the same. Throughout the day your skin is exposed to a buildup of pollutants, bacteria, oil, and makeup. You need a cleanser for your skin type to effectively remove these daily impurities, giving you that blank canvas.

The Do's and Dont's of Cleansing

DO double cleanse. Your first cleanse removes your makeup and those surface impurities. The second cleanse penetrates deeper into the skin, doing all the hard work to get your skin properly clean.

DON’T use a cleanser that leaves your skin feeling tight or dry. If your cleanser leaves your skin feeling like this, chances are you could be using it incorrectly or it is the wrong choice for your skin type. Our skin experts can prescribe the perfect cleanser for your skin.

DO cleanse morning and night. Your morning cleanse will remove excess oil and skin cell build up that occurred while you slept, your night time cleanse will remove all the impurities that built up on your skin throughout the day. Both steps are equally as important.

DON’T use products that are designed for your body on your face. Many soap like body products contain harsh detergents and other ingredients that will strip away your skin's natural oils, causing damage to the skin.

DO give back to the skin after you have cleansed. Always follow cleansing with a moisturiser and any other targeted products that have been prescribed for your skin needs.

Exfoliating

Exfoliating is a crucial step to maintain a fresh and healthy skin.

Our skin has a natural cell turnover rate, meaning it naturally sheds the top layer of dead skin cells. However as we age our cell turnover rate decreases, and we start to shed those cells slower and slower. Combine this with other factors such as changing weather conditions, product build up and sun damage, excess dead skin cells can start to accumulate on the top layer of the skin, stopping fresh healthy cells from surfacing. This can give the skin a dull, rough, lacklustre appearance.

Exfoliating as part of your skin care routine will help to speed up your cell turnover rate, providing heaps of skin benefits such as:

1. Better absorption of products, penetrating deeper into the skin, providing longer lasting more effective results.
2. Increase of blood flow and circulation, bringing oxygen and nutrients for healthier skin.
3. Helping to keep blackheads and blemishes at bay, by unclogging pores of dead skin cells and stopping build up of bacteria.
4. Help to prevent fine lines and wrinkles by buffing away dead skin cells, revealing brighter healthier skin.

Exfoliating should be performed at least once a week depending on your skin sensitivity, but can be done multiple times a week depending on the product and your skin. As with any product, there are a multitude of different types of exfoliants available, so make sure to have one of our skin experts prescribe the correct one to suit your skin type and lifestyle.

Moisturising

Cleansing and moisturising is the same as shampooing and conditioning, you wouldn’t do one without the other! And just like cleansing it should be done morning and night without fail.

Moisturising is a vital step for every skin type. Moisturising provides necessary hydration to the skin, and will prevent it from becoming dry and dehydrated throughout the day. When we moisturise we are protecting our skin's natural barrier function, which protects our skin from bad things getting in such as irritants, pollutants and bacteria, and good stuff getting out like natural oils, lipids and water content.

It’s important when selecting a moisturiser to use one that suits your specific skin needs. Using an incorrect product can actually make a preexisting skin condition worse.
